Explore the Pyramids of Giza, also known as the Giza Necropolis, built during the 4th Dynasty. Marvel at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the oldest and largest pyramid on the Giza Plateau, constructed around 2570 BC using over 2.3 million stone blocks. Standing 147 meters tall, it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Admire the Great Sphinx, the majestic guardian of the plateau with a lion’s body and Pharaoh Khafre’s head, enhanced in 1401 BC by Thutmose IV’s Dream Stele. Discover the Valley Temple, where ancient Egyptians performed the sacred Opening of the Mouth ceremony and mummification rituals.

Next, visit the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), aligned with the Pyramids and spanning nearly 490,000 square meters. GEM bridges ancient Egypt and modern innovation, featuring advanced conservation labs, research facilities, and immersive storytelling. Here, you will marvel at treasures such as the Hanging Obelisk, the 11-meter Colossus of Ramses II, and over 5,000 artifacts from Tutankhamun.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at a quality restaurant, then continue to Saqqara Step Pyramid, the magnificent creation of King Djoser (2670–2650 BC), designed by his brilliant architect Imhotep. Where is Abu Simbel located?

Abu Simbel Temples are located in southern Egypt near the Sudanese border, about 280 km (175 miles) southwest of Aswan, on the western bank of Lake Nasser.

Why is Abu Simbel famous?

The temples were built by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. They are famous for their colossal statues and for the incredible relocation project in the 1960s to save them from flooding after the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Is Abu Simbel included in a standard Nile Cruise?

Usually, no. Most Nile Cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan. While they don't sail to Abu Simbel, almost all cruises offer it as an optional add-on excursion while the ship is docked in Aswan.

How much time do you need at Abu Simbel?

Visitors usually spend 2–3 hours exploring both the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Temple of Queen Nefertari.

Is Abu Simbel suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. The site is accessible and relatively flat, but the heat can be intense. Early morning visits are recommended for families and seniors.

Is Abu Simbel worth visiting?

Absolutely. The scale, history, and preservation story of Abu Simbel make it one of Egypt’s most breathtaking archaeological sites and a highlight of any trip to Egypt.

Can I go inside the temples?

Yes! Unlike the Great Sphinx, your entry ticket includes access to the inner chambers of both the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Temple of Nefertari. You can walk all the way back to the "Holy of Holies" sanctuary.

What is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?

The Abu Simbel Sun Festival happens twice a year (around February 22 and October 22). On these dates, sunlight illuminates the inner sanctuary statues, an incredible ancient astronomical achievement.

Can Abu Simbel be done as a day trip?

Yes, it is commonly done as a day trip from Aswan, typically departing very early in the morning and returning by early afternoon.

Is Abu Simbel worth visiting?

Absolutely. The scale, history, and preservation story of Abu Simbel make it one of Egypt’s most breathtaking archaeological sites and a highlight of any trip to Egypt.
